Good Shepherd Parish

Good Shepherd Parish is the result of merger between Annunciation (est. 1906), Our Lady of Sorrows (est. 1884), St. Anthony (est. 1857), and St. Rose of Lima (est. 1919).

St. Rose of Lima's church was demolished shortly after closing in the late 1960's, however, the school building remains. The former Our Lady of Sorrows is now a Baptist church and St. Anthony is now a "catholic" church that is NOT in communion with the Vatican.

The current parish (est. 2006) is housed at the former Annunciation site — near the affluent Berry Subdivision and Indian Village neighborhood. It was built by Donaldson & Meier in 1912 and follows the Romanesque style. In honor of the former namesake, a depiction of the Annunciation is visible in the apse and similar artwork throughout. A large crucifix hangs above the freestanding altar.

The sanctuary was extended at some point but the communion rail remains intact.

St. Peter (left) and St. Paul stand at opposite transepts.

Large, rose windows adorn the top of each transept.

Scenes from the Gospel are featured in most of the stained-glass windows.

Enormous Stations of the Cross, each measuring about three feet tall, are mounted to the walls of the nave.

Good Shepherd is a cluster partner of St. Augustine—St. Monica, though the two are fairly independent and have different pastors.

Fr. Michael Nkachukwu serves as pastor as well as Vicar for the Renaissance Vicariate.

Sunday Mass is at 10:00am in the church. Mass is celebrated at 9:00am every weekday, except for Wednesday, in the Stapleton Center chapel — a neighboring senior center. Saturday Mass is at 4:00pm, also in the chapel.

St. Leo Church (St. Charles Lwanga Parish)

St. Leo Church is located at 4860 15th St., on Grand River and south of I-94. The parish was established in 1889 — an elementary school opened the following year then a high school in 1892. The parish quickly outgrew the original structure and the current church was completed in 1908.

It appears that the steeples were shortened at some time although I could not find any record of renovation.

An inscription above the main doorway quotes Luke 19:46 — "My house is a house of prayer."

The founding pastor, Fr. Matthew Meathe, wanted a large church without pillars to allow unobstructed views. Parishioner and architect Harry J. Rill designed the current edifice.

In 1983, the parish was scheduled to close but Bishop Gumbleton intervened. He asked to take over as pastor and was appointed. Gumbleton was forced to retire in 2006 when he reached the age of 75 but he continued to deliver homilies at Sunday Mass. To my knowledge, Gumbleton no longer has any involvement at St. Leo's.

The parish continued to face possible closure in recent years but has been spared largely because of their community outreach. St. Leo's has an active soup kitchen that serves much of the surrounding area.

In 2013, St. Leo's merged with St. Cecilia to form the new parish of St. Charles Lwanga. Fr. Theodore Parker currently serves as pastor. Sunday Mass is at Noon; no daily Mass unless announced.

A large crucifix stands in the north transept.

The Blessed Mother stands at the side altar; Pope St. Leo the Great stands in the south transept.

St. Augustine–St. Monica

St. Augustine–St. Monica Parish is housed in the former St. Catherine of Siena Church at 4151 Seminole, on the east side of Detroit.

St. Catherine of Siena (est. 1912) and St. Edward (est. 1927) merged in 1970 to form St. Catherine/St. Edward. In 1989, St. Catherine/St. Edward merged with St. Bernard of Clairvaux (est. 1849) to form St. Augustine–St. Monica Parish.
St. Edward's buildings were demolished but St. Bernard was sold and is, apparently, still in use by another denomination. Some claim that St. Bernard was the oldest Catholic church on the east side, however, Assumption Grotto was founded two years prior.

Like many local churches of its age, St. Augustine–St. Monica was designed by the firm of Donaldson and Meier. It follows a Romanesque style with some Byzantine influence.

Intricate motifs are featured above the confessionals.

Most of the stained-glass windows are elaborately detailed — especially those above the choir loft.

A majority of the windows in the nave show the Apostles.

Msgr. Daniel Trapp has served as pastor since 1996 and is also an instructor at Sacred Heart Major Seminary.

Sunday Mass is at 10:00am. Wednesdays and Saturdays bring 9:00am Mass (see calendar to confirm).

Update on St. Josaphat's steeple

Restoration work continues on St. Josaphat's Church as workers have constructed scaffolding and new slate shingles have arrived on-site. The goal is to finish repairs by the end of May and re-open the church in June.
The parish is grateful for the donations received but the financial burden is still enormous. The restoration is expected to cost approximately $500,000. Donations are still accepted —and needed — to continue the effort. Any donations exceeding the cost repairs at St. Josaphat will be used towards restoration at Sweetest Heart of Mary and St. Joseph, the other two churches of Mother of Divine Mercy Parish.
