Tridentine Mass & Wigilia at Sweetest Heart of Mary

On December 27, the Friday in the Octave of Christmas, Juventutem Michigan will celebrate a Tridentine High Mass at Sweetest Heart of Mary.

Young adults, age 18–35, are invited to a traditional Polish Wigilia after Mass.

We have featured Sweetest Heart of Mary before here and here. However, the sanctuary is so incredible, two posts are not enough. For more photos of SHM decorated for Christmas, check out this gallery on Flickr

Update:
If you didn't know, Sweetest Heart of Mary as of July 1st of this year is part of Mother of Divine Mercy parish which also includes St. Josaphat and St. Joseph.  You probably have heard of the recent damage at St. Josaphat.  Dan Austin, founder of HistoricDetroit.org will be donating 50% off his profits through the online store through the end of the year towards the restoration of the St. Josaphat Steeple.

Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe

This feast day, December 12, is a huge celebration for Mexican Catholics as Our Lady of Guadalupe is the patroness of Mexico. The large Catholic, Latino population in southwest Detroit had many celebrations at multiple churches throughout the day. I had the opportunity to celebrate the morning Las Mañanitas at Most Holy Redeemer.

Las Mañanitas are traditional songs that Mexicans sing early in the morning on special holidays, including the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. The celebration started with a group performance of traditional Aztec music and dance.

Afterwards, Auxiliary Bishop Donald Hanchon led a brief prayer service.
After prayer, the concert began. About a dozen Mexican folk music groups performed continuously for the next two hours. All of the songs were performed in a manner reminiscent of ad orientem, as the performers typically faced the altar.

I was pleased to see the church beyond capacity, to the point that hundreds of people had to stand in the side aisles.

Devotees commemorated the apparition of Our Lady of Guadalupe by placing votive candles and flowers at side altars. The high altar featured a large, decorated image of La Virgen.

_________________________________________________

In the evening, I attended a Spanish Mass at St. Hedwig along with three friends. Many different flags were carried in the procession, including several representing Latin America, since Our Lady of Guadalupe is the Patroness of the Americas.

After the homily, parishioners did a representation of the Our Lady of Guadalupe apparitions.

Of course, images of Our Lady of Guadalupe were placed at the foot of the altar and many people brought flowers, prayed, and posed for pictures.

After Mass, everybody gathered in the social hall beneath the church for food, music, and dance performances.

Here, we saw traditional Latin dancing, including more of the Aztec dances, but a majority of the dances had some Spanish influence.

St. Raymond – Our Lady of Good Counsel

St. Raymond–Our Lady of Good Counsel is located at 20103 Joann St. in Detroit, near 8 Mile and Schoenherr, less than two miles north of Assumption Grotto.

As the name suggests, this parish is the result of a 2011 merger between the two namesakes. Fr. Robert Kotlarz has been the pastor since the merger and began his St. Raymond pastorate in 2002.

St. Raymond Parish was established in 1941 and the current church was constructed in 1955. Watch this great video (Flash required) about the parish history, including the groundbreaking ceremony, construction of the current edifice and footage of the first Masses celebrated there.

Detroit's Our Lady of Good Counsel, not to be confused with the parish in Plymouth, was founded in 1928. The former OLGC is located at 17142 Rowe Street, near East McNichols and Hoover. For more about the last Mass at Our Lady of Good Counsel, read The Michigan Catholic.

St. Raymond–Our Lady of Good Counsel celebrates Mass everyday except for Wednesdays. On Saturdays, Confessions are heard at 3:45PM and Mass at 4:00PM. Sunday Mass is at 10:30AM, usually with a coffee social afterwards.

Daily Mass is at 8:30AM at a side altar of the church, also the location of the tabernacle. Bible study takes place on Tuesday mornings and Wednesday evenings.

The stained-glass windows are very colorful and geometric. Few saints are depicted among the windows, instead they show mostly scriptural symbols.

Nearly all of the windows and doorways have an arched top and the entire church follows the style of Romanesque Revival.

Like many churches more than 50 years old, the communion rail has been removed and the altar extended.

The parish has an active Society of St. Vincent de Paul that serves much of northeast Detroit and nearby suburbs. The former, adjacent elementary school is currently vacant and the parish is actively looking for a tenant to help raise funds. For more about the school's history, read this article (PDF) from the IHM Sisters, the order that taught at the school for decades.
