Mother of God Chaldean Cathedral

Mother of God Church was established in Southfield in 1948. The current edifice was designed in a Byzantine Revival style and completed in 1980. Two years later, the church became a Chaldean cathedral when the Eparchy of St. Thomas the Apostle was established.

Stained-glass windows in the dome depict, left to right: St. Peter and St. Paul; St Joseph and Child Jesus; Blessed Virgin Mary and Child Jesus; St. Thomas the Apostle; St. Addai and St. Mari. Like many churches, the Last Supper is depicted on the facade of the altar. 

The Sacred Heart of Jesus and Blessed Virgin Mary are depicted at side altars.

Stations of the Cross hang beneath windows that depict Gospel scenes.

Two plaques hang in the vestibule, one depiction of the Sacred Heart of Jesus as well as Madonna and Child.

St. Joseph with Child Jesus and St. Rita at the northern end of the vestibule.


St. Anthony with Child Jesus and St. Padre Pio at the southern end of the vestibule.

Many doors are engraved with a large crucifix; a statue of the Holy Family stands outside the church.

A statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary stands in a courtyard outside the cathedral.

Church of the Transfiguration Parish (Southfield)

Church of the Transfiguration is the result of a 2007 merger between four Southfield parishes. These include: St. Beatrice (est. 1966), St. Bede (est. 1954), St. Ives (est. 1964), and St. Michael (est. 1930). Of those, the parish uses only the former St. Michael. The church, constructed in 1951, is located just north of 10 Mile, a few blocks west of Lahser, in Southfield.

A bronze relief plaque, depicting Christ's transfiguration, hangs near the main entrance to the church.

The former St. Ives is now Our Lady of Albanians. St. Bede was demolished last year to make room for redevelopment. The former St. Beatrice is now a Syro-Malabar church — an Indian Catholic Church descended from disciples of St. Thomas.

A nearby prayer garden, added in 2008, displays statues of patrons from the previous parishes

A shrine to Our Lady of Fatima is also in this garden.

A Divine Mercy Chapel is located outside the church.

A depiction of Christ and the Apostles adorns the roof.

Daily Mass is at Noon, Monday–Friday. Saturday Vigil Mass is at 4:30pm while Sundays see Mass at 8:00am, 10:00am, and Noon.

One facade, behind the altar, features an engraving of Psalm 26:8.


The parish is under the direction of Franciscan friars. Rev. William Farris, OFM, is pastor while Rev. Jeremy Harrington, OFM, is associate. Rev. Mr. Thomas Mohan is permanent deacon and Br. Philip Wilhelm, OFM,  is in-residence. They are frequently assisted by senior priest Rev. John Gagala.

Statues of St. Francis and St. Anthony stand on the south side of the nave.

St. Joseph, along with Madonna and Child, stand near the entrance into the church.

An angel and the Infant of Prague stand in the vestibule.

 

Confessions are heard 10:30am–11:30am on Tuesdays and 1:00pm–2:00pm on Saturdays. Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament takes place 1:00pm–7:00pm on the first Wednesday of each month.
