St. Gabriel Parish

St. Gabriel Parish was established in 1915 and the current edifice was built in 1953. The parish high school was closed in 1971 and absorbed by Holy Redeemer. The former parish school is now occupied by Cesar Chavez Academy.

The steeple, which probably used to house a bell, and the front entrance.

A large depiction of the crucifixion adorns the high altar.

Like many parishes in the Southwest Vicariate, the congregation is mostly Latino. As such, St. Juan Diego and Our Lady of Guadalupe are located at a side altar. Standing at the opposing side altar is the Sacred Heart of Jesus.

St. Jude and the baptismal font stand in the left transept.

A large crucifix and St. Gabriel stand in the right transept.

Small windows, each about one square foot, are found in the choir loft, vestibule, and transepts.

Fr. Marc Gawronski has served as pastor for the last year. Sundays Mass times are: 9:30am (Spanish), Noon (English), and 7:00pm (Spanish). Confessions are heard at 6:00pm on Mondays and Tuesdays, followed by 7:00pm Spanish Mass. Wednesdays also bring 9:00am Spanish Mass to the parish. First Fridays also bring 7:00pm Spanish Mass.

Tridentine Mass at St. Leo's

On the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, one week from today, a Tridentine Mass will be held at St. Leo's Church.

This is Juventutem Michigan's first corporate visit to one of Detroit's historically African-American parishes. All persons of all ages are welcome to attend this liturgy.

Confessions will be be heard before Mass, starting at 6:15 p.m.

The 7:00 p.m. sung Traditional Latin Mass will be preceded by a 6:30 Rosary, at which members will pray in for our two members who have been accepted to formation by traditional institutes and for an increased acceptance of vocations to the priesthood and religious life.

St. Moses the Black (formerly Church of the Madonna)

Church of the Madonna was established in 1924. An addition was built in front of the church at a later, unknown date.

An outdoor chapel stands nearby. Its not clear if Mass or other services are held here.

In 1968, pastor Fr. William Cunningham and Eleanor Josaitis co-founded Focus: HOPE to provide the needy with career training and food assistance. Fr. Cunningham passed away in 1997 and Josaitis maintained leadership until her death in 2011.

The church is fairly small — a capacity of maybe 200.

Icons of the apostles line the edges of the ceiling.

Icons of the evangelists are in the center of the ceiling.

In 2012, Church of the Madonna clustered with Blessed Sacrament Cathedral (est. 1905)St. Benedict (est. 1915), and St. Gregory the Great (est. 1923). Last year, three of the churches, excluding the cathedral, merged to form St. Moses the Black Parish. Of the three sites, only the former Church of the Madonna remains active. The other two sites are available for weddings and other private events but do not hold weekly Mass.

A baptismal font is located in the vestibule along with an icon of the parish's patron.

The sanctuary features a window depicting Pentecost and a crucifix hanging behind the altar.

The tabernacle is located at the edge of the sanctuary, near the sacristy.

Msgr. Michael LeFevre is the current pastor in addition to his roles as Vicar for the Genesis Vicariate, administrator of Our Lady of the Rosary, and rector of Blessed Sacrament Cathedral. Sunday Mass is at 9:00am and 11:00am. Daily Mass is held Tuesdays at 7:30am, Wednesdays at 9:00am, and Thursdays at 6:00pm. The church is located at 1125 Oakman Blvd., just west of the Lodge Expressway, and across from Focus: HOPE.

Christ The King

Christ The King Parish was established in 1927 as a congregation of 300 families heard their first Mass in Redford High School. Construction soon began on a temporary church but, due to the Great Depression, it took a decade raise enough funds to complete the church.

A parish school opened in 1938 and the first church building was incorporated into the school. The school remained under the direction of IHM Sisters for decades to come. Christ The King is one of only four Detroit parishes that still maintains a K-8 school.

The current church is located on Grand River, just south of McNichols, in northwest Detroit. Fr. Victor Clore has served as pastor since 1980. Joseph Urbiel has served as permanent deacon at the parish since 2009.

The tabernacle is located to the right of the main altar near a San Damiano crucifix and icons of the four evangelists.

A confessional is found near the vestibule.
